SPRINT Discovery
Structured discovery of the situation, the pain, the risk, and the outcome they want. The rep talks 20 to 30 percent of the call, no more.
WHEN IT RUNS · THE FIRST REAL CONVERSATION. SPRINT'S SITUATION AND PROBLEM FEED PLAN'S P DIRECTLY.
Deals are lost in discovery months before anyone loses them at the close. The rep who talked seventy percent of the call walks out with a demo scheduled and no idea what the buyer actually needs, and the deal dies politely six weeks later with a we-went-another-direction email.
Every big motion rebuild I have run started the same way: listening at volume. Fifty buyer interviews at one stop. More than a thousand customer and prospect calls behind an ICP at another. SPRINT is that same listening, compressed into a repeatable call: the situation in their words, the problem and what it costs, the risk of standing still, the impact of moving, and a real next step on a real timeline.
The discipline is the talk ratio. Twenty to thirty percent, no more. The 5 Whys do the digging, and the buyer does the talking, because the buyer is the only person in the room who knows the answer.
Every letter is a question about the buyer.
The current landscape and process, in their words. You cannot diagnose what you have not seen.
The specific pain points and how they show up day to day. Symptoms first, then the disease.
The cost of keeping the status quo. If nothing changes, what breaks, and when?
The outcomes of change: which metrics improve, by how much, and who feels it.
The path forward and who else needs to be involved. Discovery that ends without a next step was a chat.
The decision timeframe and the milestones inside it. Urgency is discovered, not manufactured.
How it runs well, and how it dies.
Listen more than you talk, run the 5 Whys to root cause, quantify everything you can, connect the tactical pain to the strategic priority, and make it safe to tell you the truth.
Interrogation-style checklists. Discovery is a conversation the buyer finds valuable, not a form the seller completes out loud.
Not a definition. A standard.
Good discovery starts wide on purpose. Spend the first twenty percent on their business, because the context is what makes the other eighty percent land ten times harder.
“Tell me about your email problems. You sound like every other vendor in their inbox.”
“Tell me about your business. How do you make money? Then work inward, layer by layer, until the problem sits inside its real context.”
“So the current process is not ideal?”
“With a fifteen percent forecast error, what happens to resource allocation when the deals you counted on do not close?”
“Would improving this help?”
“If forecast accuracy went from 85 to 95 percent, what would that mean for planning, and for your team's credibility with leadership?”
“Our response rate is 20 percent. On its own: so what?”
“Seventy percent of revenue comes from outbound, so that same 20 percent is the difference of millions a month. Context is what turns a stat into a problem.”
The talk ratio is the tell. The buyer speaks seventy to eighty percent of the call, the 5 Whys do the digging, and every session gets documented in the SPRINT structure while it is still warm. Discovery that ends without a dated next step was a pleasant chat.
